Old Xaverian Marc Pittonet returns to campus to celebrate reading

June 12, 2026

Xavier College was pleased to welcome Old Xaverian and Carlton Football Club ruckman Marc Pittonet back to campus recently, as he joined students for a special conversation about reading, resilience and the importance of building strength of mind.

Held in the Kostka Library, Xavier’s dedicated Year 7 and 8 library and one of four library spaces across the College, the event gave students the opportunity to hear from Marc not only as a professional athlete, but as a passionate reader and lifelong learner.

Best known for his strength and presence on the field, Marc shared how books have played an important role in his life beyond football. As discussed in his appearance on the Cool People Reading podcast, reading helps Marc find balance, focus and calm, particularly in the lead-up to big games.

During his visit, Marc reflected warmly on his time at Xavier College, including the teachers who inspired him both academically and through sport. He shared memories of school football and the broader role that school sport played in shaping his confidence, discipline and friendships.

A key theme of the conversation was how Marc developed his love of reading. He spoke about the influence of his mother, who encouraged reading from a young age, and explained that finding a reason to read can make all the difference. Whether reading for relaxation, interest or to learn something new, Marc encouraged students to discover what motivates them and to follow that curiosity.

Marc also spoke about his favourite books as a teenager and the books he now turns to as an adult. He discussed the titles that have had an impact on him as a professional athlete, particularly those that have helped him understand performance, mindset and personal growth.

For students managing busy school, sport and co-curricular commitments, Marc offered practical advice on fitting reading into the day. He explained that reading does not always require large blocks of time, but can become a valuable habit when built into small moments and routines.

Marc also shared his experience completing a Bachelor of Commerce while pursuing a professional AFL career, highlighting the importance of discipline, organisation and continuing to challenge yourself beyond your main area of focus.

The visit was a powerful celebration of reading and a reminder of the important role men can play in modelling a love of books. For Xavier students, hearing from an Old Xaverian and elite athlete helped reinforce that reading is not separate from strength, ambition or success, but an important part of each.

Marc’s return to campus inspired students, staff and parents to see reading as a powerful habit that builds knowledge, focus, resilience and confidence, both in the classroom and beyond.
