Junior Music

Music is a vital part of personal formation at Xavier College. Our esteemed Music department is composed of experienced educators and recognised industry professionals who inspire our young musicians to reach their full potential.

In Prep to Year 2, students develop strong foundational music literacy through singing games, musical movement, pitch recognition, rhythm reading and connecting basic musical sounds and symbols through composition tasks.

In Year 3, students participate in the Year 3 Strings Program, undertaking weekly group lessons and performing in solo, small group and large ensemble settings throughout the year, developing the requisite physical, aural and expressive skills.

In Year 4, students engage in a wide range of musical activities including conducting and analysis of more complex musical elements. Students also have the opportunity to implement their musical knowledge and creativity towards creating a production, where students lead scriptwriting, choreography and staging for this production.

In Year 5, students participate in our Band and Strings Program, where they engage in weekly small group tuition and larger ensemble rehearsals on one of the 14 instruments on offer. Through this program, students build on their individualised instrumental and aural skills.

In Year 6, students consolidate their music knowledge in preparation for their transition to Senior Campus. Students complete comprehensive aural and theory work, create compositions on digital audio workstations (DAWs) and build community through percussion ensemble work and Liturgical Singing.

At Xavier College, we foster a culture of pride, achievement and success. Students prepare and perform music through various ensembles, including the String Orchestra, Choir, Junior Band and many more. Complementing these opportunities is our music curriculum, which is grounded in Kodály philosophies and centred on singing. This holistic approach allows us to teach music in a way that aligns with how students naturally learn, while nurturing each student’s unique musical potential.
