Debating & Public Speaking at Xavier College

As a Jesuit school, Xavier College proudly upholds the tradition of Eloquentia Perfecta, the union of knowledge, virtue and eloquent expression. Through debating and public speaking, students learn not only how to speak with confidence, but how to think critically, communicate persuasively and engage with integrity. The Debating and Public Speaking Program is a vibrant part of College life, with more than 250 students across Years 7–12 taking part in a wide range of internal and external opportunities.

In Years 7 and 8, many students begin their debating journey through weekly lunchtime training, supported by expert coaches and older students. Key experiences include the Junior Oratory Symposium, DAV Junior Public Speaking and Debating competitions, and internal Neighbourhood Debates.

From Years 9–12, students compete in the DAV Schools Debating Competition, the largest English-speaking high school debating competition in the world. Supported by weekly training with accredited coaches and staff, Xavier students continue to build skill, confidence, and teamwork, while also achieving strong results in competition.

Students can also extend themselves through a broad range of additional opportunities, including public speaking competitions, Model UN, British Parliamentary debating, interstate trips and Jesuit debating events.

Across the College, debating and public speaking are deeply woven into Xavier’s academic culture. From House Debating and Teacher v Student debates to the Coppens Public Speaking Tournament, students are regularly challenged to find their voice and use it with purpose.
